FESTIVAL
The 36th Australian International Amateur Widescreen Festival, conducted by the Australian Widescreen Association Box 292 Mooroolbark Vic 3138 Australia.
The Film Competition is a Class A Festival of the International Association of Film & Video Festivals.
The Movie Competition is open to amateur Movies shot for projection on a screen of width to height ratio not less than 2:1, and videos for a screen of not less than 1.77:1 ratio (approx 16:9).
The Still Competition is open to amateur photographic projection stills, or digital images shot for projection on a screen of width to height ratio of not less than 2:1.
Closing date is October 6th 2006. Overseas entrants should allow three weeks for airmail parcels to reach Australia and endorse their packages as follows:

FESTIVAL RULES
GENERAL
- All amateur films, videos and projection stills in widescreen are eligible to compete except for entries in a previous A.W.A. Festival. An amateur entry as defined by the Federation of Australian Movie Makers (F.A.M.M.), is one which was made entirely for pleasure, without commercial purpose or profit in mind, and which has not been sold.
- Every entry must be accompanied by an entry form bearing the signature(s) of the entrant(s). An authorized representative may sign on behalf of a club or group. Photocopies or copies of an entry form containing all the requested information of the original entry form are acceptable.
- The judges decision is final.
- All entrants will receive judging sheets, and a complete list of results for the competition entered.
- The Australian Widescreen Association reserves the right to retain all entries for screening until early the year following the competition closing date, and to make a copy of the entry for its library.
- While every precaution will be taken in handling entries, and every effort made to return them in the condition in which they were received, the Australian Widescreen Association takes no responsibility for loss or damage to entries and their containers.
MOVIE COMPETITION
- Films may be sound or silent, colour or black and white, originals or prints of an original of the same gauge, and must be photographed so that when properly projected, the picture width to height ratio is not less than 2:1. This may be achieved by means of an anamorphic lens, or by masking the top and bottom of the projected picture to an equal extent as specified by the entrant.
- Standard 8 films may have a single (main) magnetic soundtrack on the film. Super 8 or Single 8 films may have single track, twin track or stereo magnetic sound on film. 16mm films may have single magnetic soundtrack or optical sound on film.
- Films and videos may be of any length, but the Festival Committee reserves the right to show extracts only at public screenings.
- Trophies are awarded at the discretion of the Festival Committee, and the entry awarded the highest mark will receive the Best Movie of the Festival award. There are no separate divisions for films (any gauge) and video.
- Video entries can be PAL & NTSC system MiniDV, DVD-Video, S-VHS, VHS with a minimum screen ratio of 16:9 (1.78:1) using either ‘masked top and bottom’ format, (letterbox) or 1.5x, 1.75x or 2x electronic or anamorphic lens compression.
Standard Leaders & Trailers (for entries on film)
Each movie should have a white or pale colored or start leader of a minimum of 2 meters (6 1/2ft) for 16mm and a minimum of 1 meter (3 1/2ft) for 8mm, on which is written the title of each movie, date of completion, projection speed, numbers of sound tracks used, stereo or mono and the name of owner. Also a section of black leader for run-in to movie approximately 600mm (24") for 16mm and 300mm (12") for 8mm should be provided. Each movie should have a trailer, preferably black, of a minimum of 1 meter (40") long for 16mm and 500mm (20") long for 8mm. (FAMM ADELAIDE 1981)
STILL COMPETITION
- Stills must be original work or a copy thereof, in colour or black and white, and photographed either using an anamorphic lens of 1.5x, 1.75x or 2x compression; a wide format camera such as the Widelux or Horizon; or they may have been masked in the camera. stills masked in the mount only are not eligible for this competition.
- Stills must be photographed so that when properly projected they have a picture width to height ratio of not less than 2:1.
- The competition has two divisions - Best Still and Best Set of Stills, which are judged separately. Trophies will be awarded at the discretion of the Festival Committee.
- A maximum of two (2) stills may be entered in the Best Stills competition and a maximum of twelve (12) stills may be entered in the Best Set of Stills competition. Sets must consist of a minimum of four (4) stills up to the maximum of twelve, and any number of sets may be entered provided that entrants adhere to these numbers. A slide may not be entered in both competitions.
- In the case of transparancies: Stills should be labeled with the entrant’s name and projection order if required . In addition, stills should be marked according to international convention - when the slide itself is held with the image upright and viewed from the front, a mark or spot is placed in the lower left-hand corner of the mount.
- Projection equipment for stills in 35mm and 2¼ inch square mounts will be available. Other formats and gauges may be acceptable if the entrant can provide suitable projection equipment. 1.5x, 1.75x and 2x anamorphic lenses will be available to project the 35mm stills if required.
- Stills can also be entered on CD-ROM or DVD-ROM or DVD Video.
